Cupressus abramsiana is only known to occur in five small populations, four of which are located on Ben Lomond Mountain within a 45 minute drive from downtown Santa Cruz.  These scaly-leaved, scraggly trees are relics of a past age, survivors of widespread climate change that dug their roots in to make a final stand here. They occupy exciting niche habitats alongside many other botanical treasures. We will hike to at least two of the cypress strongholds, sit with the trees, and discuss their natural history and the peculiarities of the very special places they call home. What does the Santa Cruz Cypress have to teach us? Requirements: Be prepared for up to 4 miles of hiking. Pack snacks or picnic dinner. Class will conclude at sundown. Directions:
