Snitch Hunt

Santa Cruz Newswire - Sun, 03/01/2009 - 18:56
After reading the federal complaint for the arrest of animal rights activists on Animal Enterprise Terrorism charges, which I wrote about yesterday, this case still doesn't add up. Some of you have posted comments that if these activists had actually assaulted someone, or if there was an imminent threat of violence, they would have been arrested long ago. Instead, the FBI spent time and money building a case based on supporting evidence that includes First Amendment activity like chalking, flier distribution, and protests.

Police Torture Activist & Poet, Raul (Curly) Estremera

Santa Cruz Newswire - Sun, 03/01/2009 - 10:52
[Raul (Curly) Estremera was wrongly arrested and brutally beaten by the Hayward police. He is a poet with a long history of standing up for human rights and against police brutality, including his active support for victims of police brutality in Santa Cruz and support for U.S. political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal. Curly is known here in Santa Cruz because he never hesitated to make the trip over the hill from San Jose in support of the Santa Cruz Five at protests, forums, trials, and Citizen Police Review Board meetings and he was very active with the Santa Cruz Coalition to Free Mumia Abu Jamal. On the day Raul (Curly) Estremera was arrested and tortured he was returning home from a rally and march in Oakland for Oscar Grant III who had been murdered by a Bart police agent. In custody Raul (Curly) Estremera was brutally beaten and, among many other things, denied needed medicines, water, warmth, and competent medical treatment. What he endured should be considered torture and can easily be considered attempted murder. The police smashing of his megaphone, another of the many crimes against Raul (Curly) Estremera, is symbolic of this police attempt to silence an important voice for justice. Here, Raul (Curly) Estremera tells the entire story in his own words. Justice for Raul (Curly) Estremera! -Steven Argue]

New State Study Supports Concerns About Aerial Pesticide Spray; More Questions Remain

Santa Cruz Newswire - Fri, 02/27/2009 - 14:34
Santa Cruz, CA. February 27, 2009. A report, released last week and authored by a group of researchers from various organizations supports concerns Californians have had about the aerial spraying of pesticides in the Monterey Bay area in 2007. The study clearly shows the correlation of the unprecedented bird die off and red tide with the timing of the spraying of the pesticide Checkmate. Other questions remain unanswered.

Solidarity with the AETA 4!

Santa Cruz Newswire - Wed, 02/25/2009 - 21:21
On February 19th and 20th, the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Adriana Stumpo, 23; Nathan Pope, 26; Joseph Buddenberg, 25; and Maryam Khajavi, 20 - 4 people it described as "terrorists". Their "terrorism" apparently consisted of writing with chalk on a sidewalk, wearing bandanas while protesting, and distributing flyers about animal research at UCSC. No, seriously.
